| Is your pet
having surgery? Here are some helpful tips to make it easier for you and
your pet.
About 10 p.m. the night before, please remove all food and water. It is important that your pet has an empty stomach when we administer anesthesia. Our check-in time for surgery is between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. Because our greatest concern is the well-being of your pet, after he or she arrives at the hospital, we will perform a full physical examination. We also recommend that a pre-anesthetic blood profile be performed. This will alert the doctor to the presence of dehydration, anemia, infection, diabetes and/or kidney or liver disease, which could complicate the procedure. After the surgery, we can administer pain medication. This is usually an injection that lasts about 24 hours and has been shown to help your pet recover more quickly. Most surgery procedures require an overnight stay so that we can monitor the animal following anesthesia, and we can also check your pet before it goes home. At home, your pet may require some extra attention. We will discuss after-care with you when you pick up your animal. Remember - if you have any questions, just ask! |
